Recently unveiled at Milan Design Week was this new collection of lamps. Molecules is a comprehensive lighting collection based on the origami art of Ilan Garibi and designed in collaboration with industrial designer Ofir Zucker and Albi Serafty of Aqua Creations*.
The traditional Japanese art of paper folding begins with a blank sheet of paper which is folded and sculpted by hand into tessellations of individual molecules, with no cuts. The paper used for the origami lamp shades perfectly diffuses the light and easily resists the folding.
A complement and contrast at the same time are the superior wood structures which derive their shape by digital wood carving. the on/off switch is seamlessly integrated into the wood neck:
and the base has a subtle convex curve to accommodate the cord:
The lamps are powered by digitally dimmable LEDs, operated and controlled by touch. In Aqua's tradition, natural materials and artisanal manufacturing interact with technology; the result is an elegant and luxurious lighting collection.
*Aqua Creations Lighting & Furniture Atelier was founded in 1994 by designer-artist Ayala Serfaty and photographer Albi Serfaty.
*Ilan Garibi is represented by Talents Design in Tel Aviv.
The Burlesque Suspension lamp by Joe Velluto of JVLT may strike you as a very odd choice for a lighting fixture. But then again, imagine it in a clothing boutique, fashion showroom, above a runway, in a giant walk-in closet, hanging in a fabric store, the right restaurant or master bedroom and it takes on a whole new appeal.
Inspired by the act of disrobing and tossing one's clothes about, the fixture is a mix of shirts, skirts and pants composed of fine silk and cotton fabrics over a methacrylate shade. Made and packed in Italy, the clothes that create the lamp's silhouette are accented with Swarovski crystal buttons, adding some sparkle to the very unusual lighting fixture which exudes a sort of backlit diffused illumination.
The Burlesque 3 lamp shown above is available from P&V Lighting, contact them for purchase information.

This beautiful and unusual lamp by J.P.Meulendijks is based on, and is a tribute to, the universal art of hand shadows and hand puppetry. Playing with light and hand shadows was and is a centuries old past time long before electric light was invented.
"BIRD IN HAND" plays with this concept: All of the hands are positioned to look like a flock of birds, flying out in circles. The shadows cast on the wall looks like birds. This results in a very expressive, dynamic and striking looking lamp, with layers of humor and poetry hidden in the design.
